How to Travel Cheap – Advice and Tips from World Class Travelers

If you want to know how to travel cheap, then you are probably planning to take the plunge and get on with that trip you have been dreaming about for so long. Who knows? Maybe you could end up circumnavigating the world – more than once.

The answer to the question “How to travel cheap?” is a complex one. There is no one magic formula that addresses all methods of saving money. Every single traveler will have found one unique way that had helped him or her cut costs at a critical time.

So, below we will hear from the people themselves and you can learn how to travel cheap using advice straight from the horses’ mouths:

Most people who have traveled the world or have just been dreaming about it have heard about Matthew “Nomadic Matt” Kepnes. He set off on his first world tour back in 2004 after he got hooked on traveling following a trip to Costa Rica.

“You don’t need to be rich to travel,” Kepnes writes. He says he managed to save enough money to travel – despite his meager income – because he made it a priority.

“If travel is not a priority for you, you will always find some other things to spend money on and you’ll never have ‘enough’ money to travel,” Kepnes adds.

So, that is the first advice: save like you’ve never saved before. Kepnes did it – he managed to save $20,000 – before he set out on his first trip around the world; and if he did it, so can you.

Once that initial budget has been set and reached, the next step is to make sure it doesn’t run out before the trip is over.

The biggest single cost will always be air travel. To begin with, get flights on budget airlines; and then take it up a notch: earn free flights.

“Sign up or a few travel credit cards, collect miles and then fly for free,” Kepnes says. “Most cards offer sign-up bonuses of 50,000 points — and if you sign up for both an airline card (think a United airlines card) and a general rewards card like the Chase Sapphire or AMEX card, you can combine the two point balances and get a cheap flight faster.”
