Uzbekistan Airways says it will Weigh Passengers to ‘Ensure Flight Safety’

Uzbekistan Airways to Weigh Passengers

Uzbekistan Airways to Weigh Passengers

In what had been called a “new low” for the airline travel industry, reports state that Uzbekistan Airways had announced it would be weighing passengers – not just their luggage, but the passengers themselves – before they boarded any of their flights. The airways’ website said that before boarding, their staff will “suggest” travelers use the “special weighing machine” in the gate area because they will be “ensuring flight safety.”

In a statement released on their official website (which has since been removed), the airways said that the reason for the new “procedure” was because they were following the rules set out by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) which obliges airline companies to “carry out the regular procedure of pre-flight control passengers weighing with hand baggage to observe requirements for ensuring flight safety.”

But IATA says no such rule exists.

Chris Goater, manager of IATA corporate communications, said in a statement, “We are not aware of an IATA rule concerning the weighing of passengers and their hand luggage prior to flight.”

“All airlines have policies in place for load calculations, weight and balance of their aircraft. These policies in turn are subject to the rules and regulations of their national aviation regulator,” he added.

Uzbekistan Airways had made one promise, though: that it would keep the results a secret as the “weighing record will only contain the corresponding passenger category (i.e. male/ female/ children). As for the rest, the full confidentiality of results is guaranteed.”

In the airways’ defense though, the situation isn’t unprecedented in the travel industry. Back in 2013 Samoa Air decided that it would calculate its ticket prices based on the passenger’s weight.

Before the page was brought down (it is unclear for what brought the change of heart, as the airways wouldn’t respond to requests made by reporters who were looking for more information) the announcement had read:

Please be informed that Uzbekistan Airways airline carries out the procedure of pre-flight weighing for determination of the average weight of passenger with hand baggage.

According to the rules of International Air Transport Association, airlines are obliged to carry out the regular procedures of pre-flight control passengers weighing with hand baggage to observe requirements for ensuring flight safety.
